Cardinals Place Rookie JJ Wetherholt on 10-Day Injured List

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed rookie infielder JJ Wetherholt on the 10-day injured list due to right wrist tendinitis, as announced on Sunday. In his recent performance, Wetherholt went 0-for-4 in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates and has struggled with just one hit in his last 12 at-bats.

Wetherholt, who is 23 years old, has had a season batting average of .242, with 17 home runs and 48 RBIs over 130 games. He was drafted seventh overall by the Cardinals in the 2024 MLB Draft and signed an eight-year, $112.5 million contract extension in July. Previously, he was named MVP of the Double-A Texas League while playing for Springfield.

In response to Wetherholt's injury, the Cardinals have recalled infielder Cesar Prieto from Triple-A Memphis. Prieto, 27, returns to the team after a challenging stint where he recorded only 2 hits in 31 at-bats. He has performed better in the minors, hitting .308 with 12 home runs and 43 RBIs in 79 games.
