Cardinals Promote Cade Winquest Ahead of Orioles Game
The St. Louis Cardinals announced the promotion of right-hander Cade Winquest from Triple-A Memphis on Thursday, just before their series finale against the Baltimore Orioles at Busch Stadium.
This move comes after the team placed Peter Strzelecki on the injured list and planned a bullpen game. Winquest, who is 26 years old, will wear No. 63 and is poised to make his major league debut at the discretion of manager Oliver Marmol.
Winquest's journey to this point has been complex. He was originally drafted by the Cardinals in 2022 but was later selected by the New York Yankees in the Rule 5 draft. Although he was on the Yankees' roster, he did not play in any games before being designated for assignment. After clearing waivers, he returned to the Cardinals and has since excelled as a reliever in Memphis. His promotion provides the Cardinals with additional bullpen depth as they aim to avoid a sweep against the Orioles.
