Cardinals Sign Josh Fleming to Minor League Contract
The St. Louis Cardinals have reached an agreement with left-handed pitcher Josh Fleming on a minor league contract, as reported by Derrick Goold of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Additionally, the team has re-signed first baseman/outfielder Bligh Madris, who will be assigned to Triple-A Memphis.
Fleming, a native of the St. Louis area, was previously drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays when current Cardinals president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom was part of their front office. He was recently released from a minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs after spending six weeks in their system, where he pitched 18 1/3 innings with a 3.44 ERA. Earlier this season, he had a brief stint with the Toronto Blue Jays, making an MLB appearance in April.
In his major league career, Fleming has played six seasons, primarily in a swing role with the Rays, accumulating a 4.86 ERA over 257 2/3 innings. He has also performed well in Triple-A this year, posting a 3.16 ERA across 82 2/3 innings. Meanwhile, Madris returns to the Cardinals after a short period in the KBO, where he struggled to maintain his previous success.
