Carlos Prates Issues Warning to Islam Makhachev Ahead of Interim Title Fight
Carlos Prates has issued a warning to Islam Makhachev after the lightweight champion's manager defended Makhachev's decision to miss UFC 336. Prates is scheduled to compete against Michael Morales for the interim title on January 30, 2027, in Toronto, while Makhachev plans to return after Ramadan.
Ali Abdelaziz, Makhachev's manager, defended his client on social media, suggesting that contenders should refrain from criticism as Makhachev fights out of passion for the sport. In response, Prates stated that if Makhachev truly fought for passion, he would take on the number one contender in January. Prates emphasized his intention to end Makhachev's legacy and expressed confidence that defeating Morales would enhance his own reputation.
The upcoming fight between Prates and Morales features two top contenders in the welterweight division. Prates has achieved victories over his last three opponents, including two former UFC champions, while Morales remains undefeated, having recently defeated Sean Brady in November 2025. Makhachev currently holds the 170-pound title and is considered one of the top fighters of his era. The interim bout will determine who will challenge Makhachev upon his return later in 2027.
