Carlton Captain Comments on Player Suspensions Ahead of AFL Season
Carlton Football Club captain Patrick Cripps has spoken out regarding the suspensions of teammates Lachie Cowan and Wade Derksen, which will affect their participation at the start of the 2027 AFL season.
Lachie Cowan received a two-match suspension after admitting to using illicit substances at a party in October, which led to a hospital visit. He also faces a $5000 suspended fine and must complete educational requirements. Meanwhile, Wade Derksen was suspended for all pre-season matches and the first three rounds of the season after failing a roadside breath test in September.
Cripps described the incidents as a wake-up call for the team, highlighting the importance of maintaining strong cultural standards. He expressed disappointment but also noted the need for the group to come together and support each other moving forward. Both players will miss the season opener against Richmond on March 20 at the MCG.
