Carson Whisenhunt of the Giants to Undergo UCL Surgery

Carson Whisenhunt, a left-handed pitcher for the San Francisco Giants, is set to undergo surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. He is currently seeking a second opinion to determine whether he will require a full Tommy John surgery or an internal brace procedure.

Whisenhunt was selected 66th overall in the 2022 draft and has been regarded as one of the team's top pitching prospects. He has struggled to establish himself in the major leagues, posting a 5.90 ERA in 13 starts since his debut last year. This season, he has shown improvement in Triple-A with a 4.15 ERA but faced difficulties in his recent major league outings, culminating in an abrupt exit from a game against the Reds due to elbow pain.

With this surgery, Whisenhunt is expected to miss the entirety of the 2027 season, potentially returning in late September if he opts for the internal brace procedure. His situation adds to the Giants' pitching woes, as other players like Hayden Birdsong and Trevor McDonald are also recovering from UCL surgeries. Whisenhunt will be placed on the 60-day injured list, concluding the season with 129 days of major league service.
