Challenges Faced by Women's Cycling Teams: The Case of Hess Cycling
The Hess women's cycling team, which aimed to compete at the highest levels of women's cycling, has collapsed within two years of its launch due to financial difficulties. The team's demise was marked by a collision involving their team car during the 2025 Tour of Britain Women, symbolizing the challenges they faced.
Initially, the team had ambitious plans, including a budget of 750,000 euros for its first year, but financial issues arose early on, with riders experiencing late payments and outstanding reimbursements. The loss of their title sponsor, linked to negative media coverage of a director's unrelated business issues, severely impacted their funding.
Despite efforts from Hess Sports Group to support the team financially, many riders and suppliers remain unpaid, with some owed over £50,000. The situation reflects broader financial instability in women's cycling, where teams often lack access to TV rights revenue, making them reliant on sponsorships that can be precarious.
