Chaminda Vaas Calls for Protection of Test Cricket Amid T20 Dominance
Chaminda Vaas, a former fast bowler for Sri Lanka, has expressed concern over the declining status of Test cricket, which he believes is being overshadowed by the rise of T20 leagues. Speaking from New Delhi, Vaas urged cricket boards to take action to preserve the traditional formats of the game, highlighting their importance in developing players' skills.
Vaas, who played 111 Tests and took 355 wickets, acknowledged that T20 cricket is likely to dominate the future landscape of the sport. However, he stressed that Test and one-day formats are crucial for nurturing talent. He pointed to Sri Lanka's recent struggles in Test cricket, including a significant loss to India, as evidence of the need for more red-ball matches to help players develop.
He noted that Sri Lanka's cricket board should increase the number of Test matches to better prepare players for the challenges of the format. Vaas emphasized that understanding which format suits a player's style is essential for their success, reiterating that Test cricket remains the ultimate test of skill.
