Changes in Penn State Football's Safety Unit
Penn State football's secondary has been recognized as one of the most reliable units this season, with cornerbacks coach Terry Smith overseeing strong performances from players like Audavion Collins and Josiah Zayas. The team currently ranks fifth in the FBS for passing yards allowed, conceding an average of 141.3 yards per game.
However, significant changes have occurred within the safety unit, particularly affecting Marcus Neal Jr., who has seen limited action, playing only 11 snaps in the last two games. Coach Matt Campbell explained that the decision to limit Neal's playtime was strategic, focusing on coverage during a fast-paced game against USC. Jeremiah Cooper also experienced a drop in playing time due to physical issues stemming from a previous ACL injury.
In contrast, Jamison Patton's involvement has increased, as he recorded five tackles in the recent game against Michigan. Campbell acknowledged the challenges of integrating players from different backgrounds and emphasized the need for time to optimize their performance. Neal's future role may shift, with discussions about potentially transitioning him to a linebacker position.
