Chelsea Nears Deal for Rayo Vallecano Defender Pep Chavarria
Chelsea is approaching an agreement with Rayo Vallecano for the transfer of defender Pep Chavarria. The club has reportedly settled personal terms with the 28-year-old player and is finalizing a deal valued at approximately £16.3 million, with additional add-ons.
Chavarria, who has been with Rayo for four years after joining from Real Zaragoza in 2022, is a key target for Chelsea's new manager Xabi Alonso. The negotiations have progressed since an initial £15 million bid was rejected last month, with Rayo previously raising their asking price to as high as £42.8 million.
The left-back has expressed his desire to join Chelsea, especially after Rayo's recent loss to Crystal Palace in the Conference League final. Chavarria's addition would enhance Chelsea's defensive options, particularly after Marc Cucurella's departure to Real Madrid. Chelsea has also made several other signings this summer, including Marco Palestra and Morgan Rogers, while planning to focus on player sales in the near future.
