Chepstow Racecourse Celebrates 100 Years of Horse Racing

Chepstow Racecourse is celebrating its 100th anniversary this month, having opened in August 1926 on land acquired from the Piercefield Park estate. The venue, which nearly closed shortly after its inception, has a rich history that includes serving as an RAF base during World War II and hosting numerous music concerts.

Initially established by ten local dignitaries, Chepstow has welcomed around 20,000 spectators for its inaugural meeting. Over the years, it has hosted significant events, including the Welsh Grand National, which has been a highlight for over 70 years. The course is noted for its appeal to jockeys, featuring long straights and sweeping bends that favor the best horses.

As part of the centenary celebrations, racecourse executive director Luke Admans is organizing a dinner to honor the venue's history and the dedication of its staff. Future plans include a three-day jump racing festival aimed at providing an alternative to the Cheltenham Festival.
