Chess Bundesliga 2026/27 Season Begins This Weekend
The Chess Bundesliga is set to commence its 2026/27 season on October 9, starting at 4 p.m. Teams will quickly engage in three rounds over the first weekend, a change from the previous format that condensed the season into five weekends.
Defending champions SC Viernheim will open against promoted team SV Erkenschwick 1923, whom they recently defeated in a cup final. Viernheim retains a strong lineup, including notable players like Nodirbek Abdusattor and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. Their schedule also includes matches against SC Heimbach-Weis-Neuwied and Werder Bremen.
OSG Baden-Baden, another strong contender, will begin their season against SG Solingen. They have made significant roster changes, bringing in new players while retaining stars like Fabiano Caruana and Viswanathan Anand. The new season format aims to streamline scheduling and enhance player availability, with 16 teams competing for match points across eight boards.
