Chess Tradition Revived at Simpson's-in-the-Strand
Simpson's-in-the-Strand, a historic chess café in London, has recently revitalized its chess tradition through various events. Once a gathering place for prominent chess players in the 19th century, the establishment has seen a resurgence in chess activities thanks to efforts by Jason King and Jason Kouchak.
The café, originally opened in 1828, was a hub for the English chess scene and hosted notable players like Wilhelm Steinitz and Johannes Hermann Zukertort. After a decline in chess activities, the venue was purchased by the Savoy Hotel Group and reopened, with plans to bring back its chess heritage.
In March, Simpson's hosted its first blindfold simultaneous exhibition in a century, led by grandmaster Luke McShane. On October 18, McShane again showcased his skills against three opponents while Stuart Conquest played against twelve others. The events have drawn attention to the café's rich history, with more chess activities planned for the future.
