Chester Entrepreneur Establishes Network for Black Founders
Jemima Antwi, a 27-year-old entrepreneur from Chester, has founded Black Founders Studio (BFS) to assist black business founders after experiencing feelings of isolation in her own entrepreneurial journey. Launched in September, the not-for-profit organization aims to support early-stage black entrepreneurs, particularly women, in transforming their business ideas into reality.
Antwi, who previously started a business selling reusable water bottles, recognized common challenges faced by black founders, including limited networks and funding opportunities. Since its inception, BFS has helped approximately 50 founders, with 30 businesses set to launch at Chester Racecourse. Antwi emphasizes the importance of community support in entrepreneurship, noting that many aspiring business owners lack confidence and resources.
Through BFS, Antwi provides practical training and guidance on business structure, legal requirements, and marketing strategies. The organization focuses on fostering businesses that address real-life issues, with examples including a beauty brand catering to underrepresented skin tones and a wellness brand supporting young girls. Antwi aims to expand BFS's impact by securing funding for founders and advocating for deeper change in representation within the UK.
