Chester Zoo's Python Receives Groundbreaking Cancer Treatment
A reticulated python named after actress Jodie Foster has successfully recovered from cancer treatment at Chester Zoo, marking a potential first for snakes. The 4-meter-long python underwent electrochemotherapy after a malignant tumor was found in its jawbone.
Zoo staff noticed the snake was eating less and becoming more inactive, prompting tests that revealed a fibrosarcoma. Although initial surgery removed the tumor, it returned, leading the veterinary team to collaborate with specialists from the University of Liverpool to adapt the treatment for the snake.
The procedure involved connecting two operating tables to accommodate the python's size and maintaining her body temperature during surgery. Following the operation, the snake has returned to normal behavior, eating and exploring her habitat. The veterinary team plans to publish details of the treatment for the benefit of veterinary professionals worldwide.
