Chicago Bears Release Nick McCloud, Sign Zavier Scott
The Chicago Bears announced the release of veteran defensive back Nick McCloud on Tuesday, creating space on their roster as they prepare for a crucial stretch in the season.
In a corresponding move, the Bears signed running back Zavier Scott from their practice squad to the active roster. This decision comes as the team, currently 5-2 and second in the NFC North, gears up for a Monday Night Football game against the Seattle Seahawks.
McCloud, who is 28 years old, had recently returned to the Bears after a brief period with the Miami Dolphins. He was initially signed to the practice squad on September 22 and moved to the 53-man roster on October 17. His playing time this season was limited, with only nine defensive snaps recorded over two games. McCloud has played in 65 regular-season games since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2021, accumulating 109 tackles, one interception, and 12 passes defended.
Scott, 27, adds depth to the Bears' backfield, which has relied heavily on D’Andre Swift. He previously played for the Minnesota Vikings and has been elevated from the practice squad multiple times this season. The Bears are currently among the top rushing teams in the league, averaging over 150 yards per game.
With McCloud's departure, the Bears continue to manage their roster effectively as they face the Seahawks, while also addressing depth concerns in both the backfield and secondary.
