China Investigates Use of Formaldehyde in Cabbage Preservation
Chinese authorities have initiated an investigation into the use of formaldehyde for preserving cabbages intended for human consumption. This follows the verification of footage from Hebei province showing individuals treating cabbages with the chemical before transporting them.
Formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, is prohibited for food preservation in China. The footage was first shared by an environmental blogger, prompting police action against those involved. To mitigate public concern, officials are conducting inspections in markets nationwide.
Investigators aim to determine the extent of this practice and trace any affected vegetables. Local authorities in Kangbao county have stated that any illegal activities will be strictly punished to ensure food safety. Meanwhile, the Xinfadi market in Beijing confirmed that its cabbages were not sourced from the affected suppliers.
