Christian Horner Advocates for Changes to F1 Budget Cap
Christian Horner has voiced his agreement with the need for changes to the Formula 1 budget cap, stating that it no longer serves its intended purpose. He shares this view with James Vowles, who is advocating for a sliding scale that would benefit teams at the back of the grid, contrasting with the current uniform spending limit for all teams.
Horner pointed out that while top teams like Mercedes and Ferrari have advanced facilities, those at the lower end have had to invest significantly to catch up, which affects their performance on the track. He noted that the budget cap, which is set at just over $200 million, does not encompass all expenses, allowing teams to spend significantly more, sometimes up to $600 million.
He emphasized that the cap was originally intended to stabilize the sport and prevent financial instability among teams. However, he believes that the current regulations need to be adjusted to ensure fairness and efficiency, as teams are now more financially viable than they were in the past. Horner's perspective contrasts with that of Toto Wolff, who argues that the cap limits salaries and hinders recruitment of top engineering talent.
