Clarke Schmidt Set to Return to Yankees Roster

Clarke Schmidt is anticipated to return to the New York Yankees' active roster on Wednesday, following his time on the 60-day injured list. This update comes from manager Aaron Boone, who indicated that the team is preparing for the series finale against Minnesota.

To accommodate Schmidt's return, the Yankees have optioned Bradley Hanner to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre. Additionally, the team will need to make another roster move to create a 40-man spot, with Fernando Cruz being a potential candidate for the 60-day injured list due to a partially torn UCL.

Schmidt, who has not pitched in the MLB since undergoing Tommy John surgery in June 2025, has made five rehab appearances in the minors, showcasing his ability to pitch 1-2 inning stints. He averaged 94.1 mph on his fastball during these outings. While he won't be positioned as a starter this season, the Yankees envision him taking on that role in 2027.
