Cleveland Browns' Todd Monken Discusses QB Competition Ahead of Preseason
On Tuesday, Todd Monken, the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns, announced that both Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson will start in separate preseason games as they vie for the starting quarterback role.
During a segment on NFL Network, insider Cameron Wolfe shared Monken's desire for one of the quarterbacks to clearly establish themselves through their performance. Monken has noted Sanders' growth over the past four months, although he acknowledges that Sanders still has areas to improve. Sanders had a challenging rookie season, finishing with a 3-4 record and poor statistics, while Watson has struggled to regain his elite form since his time with the Houston Texans in 2020.
Reports indicate that Sanders may currently have the edge in the competition, despite both players experiencing difficulties during training camp. Monken has emphasized the need for Sanders to improve his huddle efficiency and decision-making, while Watson must focus on reducing turnovers, having thrown six interceptions so far. The decision on who will start against the Chicago Bears on August 15 and the Buffalo Bills on August 22 remains undecided, with the leading candidate expected to start the preseason finale against the New England Patriots on August 27.
