Cliff Collapse at Steamer Lane Raises Concerns for Surfers
On August 30, a cliff collapse occurred at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, captured by Surfline's live feed at 12:46 p.m. This incident is part of a series of erosion events that have affected the area over the past few years.
During the collapse, approximately a dozen surfers were present in the water, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. The recent rockfall added smaller debris to the existing rubble from a significant collapse in June, although it has not notably impacted wave quality.
The Santa Cruz World Surfing Reserve is collecting feedback from surfers regarding the erosion's effects on surfing conditions. City officials have placed caution tape near the cliff due to visible cracks indicating potential further erosion. A shoreline adaptation plan is being developed to address coastal erosion, with specific proposals expected to be outlined between fall 2026 and winter 2027.
