Clinton Shepherd to Join Penn State Wrestling Early by Forgoing Senior Year

Clinton Shepherd, a Class of 2027 commit to Penn State wrestling, has decided to forgo his senior year of high school to join the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club in State College. This announcement was made on Wednesday.

Shepherd, who comes from Crown Point High School in Indiana, is recognized as the No. 6 pound-for-pound recruit in his class. He has an impressive junior freestyle record and won an Indiana state championship at 150 pounds in February 2026.

By opting for a gray shirt, Shepherd will be able to compete in college open tournaments while preserving his eligibility. This decision aligns with a strategy used by some athletes to maintain a full five years of eligibility upon enrolling in college. Shepherd's situation is reminiscent of past Penn State athletes who have taken similar paths.
