Colin Kaepernick No Longer Watches NFL, Calls League's Actions Performative
Colin Kaepernick, the former NFL quarterback known for his protests against racism and police brutality, has announced that he no longer watches professional football. He described the NFL's attempts to address these issues as performative.
Kaepernick, now 38, expressed his discontent with the league during an interview promoting his upcoming memoir. He stated that he cannot support an organization that has blackballed him and targeted other players who protested alongside him. Instead, he has turned his attention to college football.
Kaepernick's protests began in 2016 when he sat during the national anthem and later kneeled, sparking widespread attention. After opting out of his contract in 2017, he filed a grievance against NFL team owners for collusion. The NFL settled grievances with Kaepernick and former teammate Eric Reid in 2019. Kaepernick criticized the NFL's subsequent initiatives, including the Inspire Change program and various slogans, questioning their sincerity and effectiveness in combating racism.
