College Basketball Coaches Discuss Regular Season Game Limits
The college basketball regular season is set to expand to a maximum of 32 games starting in the 2026-27 season, a change that has prompted discussions among coaches about the length of the season. This marks the first increase in the number of games allowed since the 2006-07 season, which had a limit of 31 games.
Nearly 100 Division I coaches participated in a poll regarding the optimal number of games, with 47% favoring the current limit of 30-32 games. However, 30% supported an increase to 33-35 games, while 16% advocated for 40 or more games. The increase to 32 games allows teams more flexibility in scheduling, with programs like Connecticut, Duke, and Arizona planning to take advantage of the additional game.
Coaches noted that the financial implications of more games could be significant, especially in light of rising costs associated with player payments. Some believe that the regular season may expand further in the coming years, potentially requiring adjustments to the season's start date to accommodate additional games. The consensus among coaches indicates a willingness to explore further increases in the future.
