College Football Playoff Negotiations with ESPN Approach Deadline
The College Football Playoff (CFP) leaders are scheduled to meet with ESPN to discuss media rights for a proposed 24-team playoff bracket. This meeting comes as the CFP's exclusive negotiation window with ESPN is expected to close without an agreement.
CFP officials plan to present a final financial proposal, which will allow ESPN five business days to review it. The network's response deadline is set for either October 16 or 19. Despite ongoing negotiations, sources indicate that the two sides have not found common ground on financial terms, with ESPN's latest offer still falling short of the CFP's expectations.
CFP executives anticipate a final offer that could exceed $320 million, which is significantly above the current contract's annual average of $1.3 billion. If an agreement is not reached, the CFP may consider splitting media rights among multiple networks. The proposed playoff structure includes 23 at-large teams and one guaranteed spot for a Group of Six team, with discussions ongoing about scheduling and potential conflicts with existing games.
