College Football Playoff Set for 24-Team Expansion by 2027
The College Football Playoff is on track to expand to a 24-team format by 2027, as reported by FOX Sports. Ongoing discussions among CFP leaders indicate that a deal is nearing completion, pending final approval.
ESPN has reported that the CFP and ESPN are in the process of finalizing an agreement that would grant ESPN the broadcasting rights for the additional games until the end of the 2031 college football season. This expansion will also eliminate Power Four conference championship games and shift the start of the regular season forward by one week.
The proposed changes include the addition of 12 new teams, necessitating an expanded first round and the introduction of a second round, likely to be held on campus. Traditional New Year’s Six bowl sites would be incorporated into the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. Furthermore, the Army-Navy game is expected to be scheduled during the first week of December, coinciding with what is currently known as conference championship Saturday.
