College Football Playoff Set to Expand to 24 Teams by 2027
ESPN has reported that the College Football Playoff (CFP) is close to finalizing a deal to expand its playoff field to 24 teams by 2027. This development comes just two years after the playoff format was increased from four to twelve teams.
The anticipated expansion is part of ongoing negotiations between ESPN and the CFP for a new broadcasting agreement. This deal is expected to eliminate Power 4 conference championship games and start the season a week earlier. The proposed 24-team structure would consist of 19 at-large bids, champions from the Power 4 conferences, and the highest-ranked Group of 6 team.
The Big Ten has been a strong advocate for this expansion, with Commissioner Tony Pettiti addressing concerns that it might diminish the quality of the games. He emphasized that the new system would introduce tiered incentives, where the top eight seeds would receive a first-round bye and home games, while lower-seeded teams would compete for better rankings and home game opportunities.
