College Football Playoff Set to Expand to 24 Teams
College football officials are reportedly close to finalizing a deal to expand the College Football Playoff (CFP) to 24 teams, with implementation expected to begin in 2027. This expansion would double the current 12-team format, which itself was an increase from the previous four-team playoff that ran from 2014 to 2023.
Critics have expressed concerns about the expansion, arguing it could diminish the significance of the regular season and negatively impact bowl games. However, proponents suggest that a larger playoff field could provide opportunities for more teams to compete, including those that have historically been on the fringe of playoff contention.
Under the proposed format, teams ranked 9-16 would host the first-round games, creating a more vibrant atmosphere on college campuses compared to neutral site games. This change is seen as a way to enhance fan engagement and support for college football.
