Collingwood has initiated a significant move to acquire Zak Butters, a free agent from Port Adelaide, by proposing a club-record contract.

The offer reportedly amounts to approximately $1.8 million per season over eight years, marking a bold late attempt to sign one of the league's top players. Previously, it was thought that the competition for Butters' signature was primarily between the Western Bulldogs, Geelong, and Richmond.

Collingwood has also been pursuing two-time Brownlow Medallist Lachie Neale, which could lead to a formidable midfield lineup including Nick Daicos, Butters, and Neale by Round 1 of 2027.
