Colton Herta's Superlicence Situation Clarified Amid Confusion
Colton Herta's pursuit of a Formula 1 superlicence has led to significant confusion within the F1 paddock. The situation is tied to the 2025 IndyCar season, with the FIA stating that Herta has 39 points, which is insufficient for a superlicence application.
During the first free practice session at the Mexico Grand Prix, Herta seemed to have accumulated 40 points, enough for the necessary superlicence. However, the FIA clarified that he is still one point short. Herta has earned 35 points from IndyCar and four from his F1 practice sessions, but discrepancies regarding his IndyCar points have contributed to the confusion.
Herta's classification in the 2025 IndyCar season has been confirmed as seventh, which limits his total points. He requires one more F1 practice session to meet the superlicence criteria, with Cadillac planning to provide him additional opportunities. The superlicence is valid for one year, but applying for it offers a three-year window for reapplication under certain conditions, allowing Herta potential future opportunities in F1.
