Colton Herta's Superlicence Situation Explained Amid Confusion
Colton Herta's quest for a Formula 1 superlicence has generated significant confusion within the F1 paddock. The American driver is currently reported to have 39 points, falling short of the 40 needed to apply for the superlicence.
During the first free practice session at the Mexico Grand Prix, Herta appeared to have reached 40 points, but the FIA clarified that he is still one point short. Herta has accumulated 35 points from IndyCar and four points from his F1 practice sessions. The confusion stems from the classification of his points from the 2025 IndyCar season, where he was initially thought to be sixth but was later confirmed to be seventh, affecting his total.
To qualify for the superlicence, Herta needs to complete one more F1 practice session, which could occur at the upcoming Sao Paulo Grand Prix or in Las Vegas. Cadillac, his team, has indicated plans to provide him with additional practice opportunities. Once Herta applies for the superlicence, it will be valid for one year, but he will have a three-year window to secure another opportunity without needing to meet the 40-point requirement again, provided he completes a practice session within that timeframe.
