Colts' QB Battle: Richardson and Leonard Compete for Backup Role
The Indianapolis Colts are assessing their quarterback situation as starter Daniel Jones continues his recovery from a torn Achilles tendon sustained last December. Jones is expected to be ready for Week 1, while 2023 first-round pick Anthony Richardson Sr. and 2025 sixth-round pick Riley Leonard are vying for the backup role.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen indicated that the competition between Richardson and Leonard will extend through the preseason finale against the Detroit Lions on August 29. Steichen mentioned that there is no set timetable for deciding on the backup quarterback, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming practices and games.
In the Colts' preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons, Leonard will start with the second-team offense, while Richardson will follow with the third team. Richardson previously started in a preseason tie against the New England Patriots, completing 11 of 14 passes for 145 yards, alongside rushing for 53 yards and a touchdown. Leonard's performance included 10 completions on 21 attempts for 89 yards and an interception. Steichen noted that both quarterbacks have shown promise during training camp.
