Commanders Sign Defensive Tackle Byron Cowart

The Washington Commanders have signed defensive tackle Byron Cowart to enhance their defensive line depth after D.J. Davidson's retirement. The announcement was made on Tuesday.

Cowart, who has played in 51 NFL games, missed the entire previous season due to an ankle injury. At 30 years old, he has recorded 21 career starts, including 14 with the New England Patriots in 2020 and seven with the Chicago Bears in 2025. He is expected to compete for a rotational role in Washington.

Previously, Cowart participated in a workout with the Atlanta Falcons in June, but did not secure a contract. He will now join a defensive line that includes Daron Payne, Javon Kinlaw, and Jer’Zhan Newton. Additionally, the Commanders have released guard Sala Aumavae-Laulu and safety Robert McDaniel, both of whom will enter the waiver wire. The team maintains over $43 million in cap space, allowing for potential further roster adjustments.
