Common Strength Training Mistakes Triathletes Make
Strength training is essential for triathletes, yet many face challenges when integrating it into their routines. Triathletes, who excel in swimming, cycling, and running, often feel uncertain about weightlifting, leading to common mistakes.
David Winton, a triathlon coach from Scottsdale, Arizona, emphasizes the importance of consistent strength training throughout the year, not just during the off-season. He recommends that athletes engage in strength training twice a week during the race season, with the possibility of increasing to three or four sessions in the off-season.
Winton points out that many triathletes underestimate the time needed for effective strength workouts, often believing they require lengthy sessions. He advises that shorter sessions of 30 to 40 minutes can be sufficient. Additionally, he highlights the mistake of focusing on lighter weights and high repetitions, suggesting that heavier weights with fewer reps are more beneficial for building strength. Winton also cautions against equating soreness with effective workouts, stressing that strength training should complement overall training without overwhelming it.
