Community Mural Project Underway in St Helens to Combat Graffiti

A community mural project is currently underway in St Helens, Merseyside, aimed at transforming an area frequently targeted by graffiti. The mural will display the message Welcome to St Helens and incorporate elements of the town's heritage, including images of Jaume Plensa's Dream sculpture and the World of Glass museum.

Professional artist Tom Glynn, along with local youth, is leading the initiative, which is supported by St Helens Council. Deputy leader Sharon Roughley emphasized the importance of creating a vibrant space for the community, noting that the existing graffiti deters visitors. The mural will also feature an image of a miner to educate younger generations about the town's mining history.

The project, commissioned by the council, involves collaboration with local community groups, including Powered by Hiphop and Kingsyze Graffiti. Glynn expressed hope that the mural will help reduce vandalism in the area, highlighting the significance of community involvement in maintaining the artwork. The mural is expected to be completed in approximately three weeks.
