Comrades Marathon Association Confirms Independence from KZNA

The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has confirmed its decision to not re-affiliate with KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA) after a Special General Meeting held on August 1 in Pietermaritzburg.

During the meeting, which saw over 1,000 members participating either in person or online, members voted overwhelmingly against re-affiliation. This decision stems from ongoing disputes regarding unpaid license fees and the scheduling of future events. The CMA had previously opted to affiliate solely with Athletics South Africa (ASA).

The CMA Board emphasized the importance of member engagement in determining the Association's direction. Following a previous resolution in November 2025 to withdraw from KZNA, members reiterated their stance against re-affiliation, opting instead for a CMA-first approach in their dealings with athletic bodies. The CMA is preparing for the Centenary Edition of the marathon scheduled for June 13, 2027, while remaining open to constructive dialogue with KZNA and ASA.
