Comrades Marathon Unveils Centenary Plans Amid ASA Dispute
The Comrades Marathon has officially launched its centenary edition, scheduled for June 13, 2027, with a record entry cap of 28,000 participants. This announcement comes as Athletics South Africa (ASA) has distanced itself from the event, following the Comrades Marathon Association's (CMA) decision not to re-affiliate with KwaZulu-Natal Athletics due to ongoing disputes over unpaid fees and event scheduling.
ASA's statement clarified that the 100th Comrades Marathon will not be sanctioned by the federation, citing the CMA's failure to meet governance and regulatory requirements. Despite this, the CMA introduced the race campaign titled The Greatest Story Ever Run, which was selected from over 200 submissions and reflects the marathon's rich history since its inception in 1921.
The 2027 race will mark the 50th edition of the traditional Down Run route, starting in Pietermaritzburg and finishing in Durban. The CMA has emphasized that the increased entry cap is part of extensive planning to ensure safety and a memorable experience for participants and spectators. Entry fees will remain unchanged, and the entry process will open on August 25, 2026, with special phases for dedicated runners.
