Concerns Raised Over Woodside's Gas Drilling Plans in Western Australia
Woodside Energy's proposal to drill for gas off the north-west coast of Western Australia faces significant scrutiny from the state's Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), which has raised concerns about potential damage to coral reefs and the risk of oil spills.
A draft letter from the EPA criticized the company's plans to protect endangered turtles and blue whales near Scott Reef, stating that these measures would likely be ineffective. The proposed development of the Browse gasfield, located approximately 300 km from the Kimberley coast, could threaten the unique ecosystem of Scott Reef, home to over 1,500 species.
In response to the EPA's concerns, Woodside has modified its drilling plans, including the addition of shear rams intended to quickly seal any leaks. However, environmental advocates argue that these measures are insufficient and rely on unproven technology. The EPA's assessment process is ongoing, with a final report expected to be submitted to the WA environment minister, followed by a public appeal period.
