Concerns Rise Over Premier League Players' Heavy Schedule
The Premier League has resumed play following a three-week break, yet many players did not experience any rest during this period. A total of 25 players from the league participated in full international matches, with several, including Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk, having already played extensive minutes in the previous season.
Experts are warning that the current schedule is unsustainable, with players like Declan Rice and Harry Kane logging over 4,000 minutes in competitions last season. This intense workload has led to withdrawals from the England squad by five players, indicating the strain of the demanding schedule.
Maheta Molango, CEO of the Professional Footballers' Association, criticized the system, calling it unhealthy for players. He advocates for mandatory breaks to ensure player well-being. Meanwhile, experts emphasize the need for better management of players' physical and mental health, as the current structure does not adequately address these issues. The introduction of new tournaments and the absence of a governing body to regulate match schedules complicate the situation further.
