Controversial Goal in Manchester Derby: Haaland's Winner Under Scrutiny
Erling Haaland's goal for Manchester City in the recent Manchester derby, which resulted in a 1-0 victory over Manchester United, has raised questions due to its controversial nature. The Professional Game Referees, known as Pro Ref, acknowledged an error in judgment regarding the awarding of the goal.
The goal was initially disallowed for offside but was later overturned by VAR, which determined that Haaland was onside, having been played in by Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu. However, Enzo Fernandez of Manchester City was in an offside position while attempting to play the ball, leading to confusion over the decision.
Pro Ref stated that the VAR team failed to recognize the impact of Fernandez's position on the play. They noted that while Fernandez was offside, the VAR incorrectly focused on whether he touched the ball, which is irrelevant under the offside rule. This oversight has led to further scrutiny of the officiating process during the match.
