Controversy Surrounds India's Para-Shooting Team Selection for Asian Games
The selection process for India's para-shooting team for the Aichi-Nagoya Para Asian Games has sparked controversy as a group of para-shooters has raised allegations of corruption and financial extortion. The athletes have requested an independent investigation into claims of manipulation by officials from the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) and its Shooting Technical Committee (STC).
In a formal complaint submitted to the Sports Authority of India, the shooters accused officials of demanding 20 percent of government cash awards as a condition for team selection. They also alleged that the allocation of international quota places was influenced by financial considerations rather than performance rankings. The complaint noted that two of the 15 available quota spots were forfeited when athletes refused to comply with these demands.
PCI president Devendra Jhajharia has dismissed the allegations, asserting that the selection adhered strictly to established guidelines and was conducted fairly. Meanwhile, a source from the Sports Ministry indicated that while genuine complaints would be reviewed, the team for the Para Asian Games has already been finalized. The athletes have expressed their intention to pursue legal action if their concerns are not addressed.
