Courtney Lawes Advocates for Inclusion of Overseas Players in England Selection

Courtney Lawes, a veteran player with 105 caps for England, has expressed that the selection process for the national rugby team should not be confined to players based in domestic clubs. Lawes, who recently signed a one-year contract with Sale after two seasons in France, believes that including overseas players is essential for the development of the game.

Lawes highlighted the presence of notable English talents playing abroad, such as Jack Willis, who has excelled in France. He pointed out that while England has better access to players in the Premiership, other nations successfully incorporate overseas players into their squads. Despite not being included in the first training camp of the season, Lawes is focused on proving himself in the Premiership.

Having initially retired from international rugby after the 2023 World Cup, Lawes did not anticipate returning to the England setup. He noted that while England's recent performances have been inconsistent, the team possesses the talent to improve. His last appearance for England was during a narrow semi-final loss to South Africa in 2023.
