Cowboys Coach Brian Schottenheimer Evaluates Backup QB Battle

Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer has not finalized the backup quarterback position, even though Joe Milton III has performed well during the preseason.

This offseason, the Cowboys signed Sam Howell, a former starting QB for the Washington Commanders, to compete with Milton for the backup role. Howell struggled with accuracy in his first season with Dallas, but has shown improvement in the preseason.

Schottenheimer acknowledged Milton's progress, noting his enhanced understanding of the offense compared to last year. Milton has completed 21 of 28 passes for 286 yards and three touchdowns in two preseason games, while Howell has completed 15 of 22 passes for 159 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. The Cowboys will play their final preseason game against the New Orleans Saints, where Howell will have another opportunity to prove himself.
