CPI Inflation Rises to 3.7% in September Driven by Soaring Gas Prices
Inflation in the United States rose to 3.7% annually in September, an increase from 3.4% in August, according to the latest Consumer Price Index data. This surge exceeded economists' predictions of a 3.6% rise.
Monthly prices increased by 0.6% in September, up from 0.4% the previous month. A notable contributor to this inflation was the 9.1% rise in gas prices, which reached an average of $4.33 per gallon, setting a new record. Additionally, fuel oil prices spiked by 15.3% as colder months approach.
Core inflation, which excludes food and energy prices, also rose to 2.6% annually, up from 2.4% in August. This increase in core inflation, driven by higher travel and leisure costs, has led to speculation that the Federal Reserve may consider raising interest rates sooner than anticipated. Analysts suggest that the persistent inflation indicates ongoing economic pressures.
