Cristian Romero Names Julian Alvarez as Messi's No. 10 Heir for Argentina
Argentina is currently looking for a player to take over the iconic No. 10 shirt following Lionel Messi's retirement from international soccer. Cristian Romero, the new captain of the national team, has expressed his preference for Atletico Madrid teammate Julian Alvarez to inherit the number.
Romero highlighted Alvarez's qualities, stating that his choice is based not only on football skills but also on his character, describing him as humble and a family-oriented individual. While Romero initially considered a different approach, he ultimately decided that Alvarez should wear the No. 10. He has discussed this with Alvarez, who appears hesitant about taking on the responsibility.
Another contender for the No. 10 shirt is Nico Paz, but no official decision has been made yet. Romero's suggestion to retire the number faces challenges due to FIFA regulations, which require consecutive numbering for official tournaments. This rule has previously prevented Argentina from retiring the No. 10 as a tribute to Diego Maradona.
