Cristiano Ronaldo Wins Inaugural BOAT Award for 2008 Season
Cristiano Ronaldo has been recognized as the first recipient of the BOAT (Ballon d'Or of All Time) award, celebrating his remarkable 2008 season with Manchester United. This award was established by France Football to ignite discussions about the greatest Ballon d'Or-winning seasons in football history.
In a fan-driven voting process, Ronaldo's 2008 campaign was chosen over Lionel Messi's record-setting 91-goal year in 2012. Unlike the traditional Ballon d'Or, which is decided by a panel of journalists, the BOAT award allowed fans to vote digitally, with a nominal fee of one euro required for participation.
The voting attracted significant engagement, with thousands of fans casting multiple votes to support their preferred candidates. Ronaldo and Messi dominated the top rankings, with Brazil's Ronaldo Nazario's 2002 season being the only other campaign to break their hold on the top positions.
