Croatian Police Investigate Antisemitic Chants by Hajduk Split Fans
Croatian police are conducting an investigation into antisemitic chanting by fans of Hajduk Split that occurred prior to their Conference League match against Ajax on Thursday.
Footage shared online captured supporters chanting about Auschwitz and Adolf Hitler while marching to the stadium, which included a mock coffin marked with 'Ajax' being carried in a yellow car. The incident has drawn condemnation from Croatia's ombudswoman, Tena Simonovic Einwalter, who described it as a manifestation of hatred and intolerance, and from the Croatian government, which denounced the glorification of the Nazi regime.
Local police reported that arrests have already been made in connection with the chants, and additional individuals are being pursued. Although Hajduk Split won the match 2-1, the game was briefly halted due to fireworks in the stands. The club issued an apology on social media after the match, though it did not specifically address the antisemitic chants. UEFA can take action for incidents occurring in the stadium, while Croatian football has faced previous sanctions for similar behavior.
