Cubs Activate Edward Cabrera, Option Javier Assad to Triple-A

The Chicago Cubs have activated right-hander Edward Cabrera from the 15-day injured list and optioned fellow right-hander Javier Assad to Triple-A Iowa. This roster change was made in preparation for Cabrera's start in the series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Cabrera had been sidelined due to a left hamstring and adductor strain sustained during a game against the New York Mets. His return was anticipated, and the activation was confirmed just before the final game of the series against the Cardinals. Assad has contributed significantly this season, pitching 80.1 innings with a 3.59 ERA across various roles.

Under league rules, Assad must remain in the minors for at least 15 days, with the earliest possible return date set for August 31, unless necessitated by another injury. The Cubs opted to send down Assad rather than designate another pitcher for assignment, as they aim to maintain depth in their pitching staff. Manager Craig Counsell indicated that the team will continue with a five-man rotation for now, with the possibility of expanding to a six-man rotation as roster limits increase in September.
