Cubs Claim Infielder Gabriel Arias from Mets
The Chicago Cubs have acquired infielder Gabriel Arias from the New York Mets, bolstering their infield depth as they pursue a playoff berth. This transaction was announced on Wednesday, following the Mets' decision to designate Arias for assignment earlier in the week.
Arias had recently joined the Mets after being claimed off waivers from the Cleveland Guardians. To accommodate him on the 40-man roster, the Cubs transferred reliever Phil Maton to the 60-day injured list. Since Arias is out of minor-league options, he will require an active roster spot upon reporting.
This move comes as the Cubs deal with injuries to key players, including shortstop Dansby Swanson and utility man Matt Shaw. Arias, who can play multiple infield positions, offers the Cubs additional experience. Previously regarded as a promising prospect, Arias has struggled offensively but has shown defensive reliability this season. The Cubs will need to make another roster move before their upcoming series against Seattle.
