Cubs Re-Sign Andrew Wantz to Minor League Contract

The Chicago Cubs have re-signed reliever Andrew Wantz to a minor league contract, as reported by Tommy Birch of The Des Moines Register. This decision follows Wantz's brief stint in free agency after being outrighted over the weekend.

Wantz made a one-time appearance last week when the Cubs designated Jameson Taillon for assignment. In that game against St. Louis, he pitched two innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk. Due to his limited availability, the Cubs replaced him with Jake Woodford as they prepared for multiple acquisitions on deadline day.

This marks Wantz's second appearance in Major League Baseball this season. He had a short tenure with the Tampa Bay Rays in late June and previously spent three years in middle relief with the Los Angeles Angels from 2021 to 2023. After undergoing elbow surgery in mid-2024, he missed most of last season and has primarily played in Triple-A this year, recording a 5.88 ERA with a 22% strikeout rate over 49 innings.
